On July 16 & 17, we ventured fifteen miles south of Portland, Oregon to the village of Sherwood to help celebrate the Sherwood Robin Hood Days. Friday night featured a knighting ceremony recognizing many of the public spirited volunteers of the Robin Hood Association, who use the festival as a way of raising money for good works as well as publicity for Sherwood. As dusk settled, the town got a second look at the Starlight Parade float, as we drove through town letting people know about Saturday's fun and games. With a police escort, we toured several Sherwood neighborhoods, to rousing cheers and promises that yes, we'll come down to old town Sherwood and join in Saturday's festivities.
Saturday morning featured a parade which stepped off promptly at 10:00 a.m. It featured many floats, decorated vehicles, people dressed in costume, horses, dogs, tractors, and some entries which defied description. Since your webmaster was walking with the St. Wolfgang's float (and forgot the camera) we only have pictures of the Sweepstakes grand prize winning float, which was ours. Huzzah!!!
The parade was followed by a day of fun and frolic in Old Sherwood Town, including performances by both St. Wolfgang's Bavarian Guild and The Olde World Puppet Theatre (Guildmaster Steven M. Overton's Renaissance Marionette Theatre). The townspeople came out in record numbers, and everyone is already looking forward to a repeat performance next year.
Our heartfelt thanks go out to Phil McGuigan, President of the Robin Hood Association and all the other wonderful people who made our stay in Sherwood most memorable and mainly a hoot. See you next year!
